— Patsy Keever, vice chair of North Carolina’s Democratic Party, in a post to her Facebook page after she called her opponent for chair of the party, Janice Covington, a man at a public forum, New York Daily News reports.
Covington, who is transgender, was listing the various groups she represented as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2012, according to QNotes. “I ran as a senior citizen. I ran as a disabled vet. I ran as a woman. I ran as LGBT,” Covington told the forum. “And what did I leave out? There’s one more.”
Keever cut in with “a man,” to which Covington retorted, “There ain’t no man left in here, honey.” In a statement to QNotes, Covington called it, “a bigoted slur,” adding, “I am a proud transgender woman and for me to be violated in this way at a public forum by a leader of the party was completely out of line.”
A new experiment from The Politico Poll reveals that while voters are willing to support candidates who aren't white men, they are more likely to penalize a candidate who is transgender or explicitly identified as "gay."
As part of the experiment, Politico's polling partner, Public First, showed thousands of respondents a series of head-to-head matchups involving hypothetical candidates who differed in demographic characteristics, such as race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity; religious beliefs and practices; career, with titles such as doctor, attorney general, or CEO; and political alignment, described in a single sentence as progressive or moderate Democrat, independent, or moderate or MAGA Republican.
U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a 22-term congresswoman representing Northwest Ohio, has released two campaign ads opposing "gender ideology" ahead of the November election.
The first ad was posted to X on September 17 by Medium Buying, a Columbus-based political advertising firm, according to the Buckeye Flame, an Ohio LGBTQ news outlet.
In the ad, Kaptur seeks to counter attacks portraying her and other Democrats as too supportive of transgender rights while redirecting voters' attention to the economy and affordability.
"We're stuck in another unnecessary war and inflation is making everything more expensive, but my opponent won't talk about all that," Kaptur says, referring to her Republican challenger, former state Rep. Derek Merrin. "He'd rather lie about my record.
The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals has overturned the voluntary manslaughter conviction of a man who killed a Black transgender woman, ruling that a lower court "erred" by preventing him from using the victim's transgender identity in his self-defense claim.
Samuel Ward Jr. fatally shot Paris Lee at her home in Cordova, Tennessee, on June 29, 2022. A Shelby County jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter in May 2025.
In testimony presented at trial, Ward's account was that he had gone to Lee's home and gotten into a verbal altercation with her, during which she asked him to leave. According to the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, he claimed Lee pointed a gun at him while they were at the top of a staircase, causing him to fall backward. He told police that he drew his own weapon and fired upward from the bottom of the stairs, striking Lee.
