Perfume Genius: Essentials (Audio and Video)

cdfd1e61

As a companion to this week’s feature interview with Mike Hadreas — aka Perfume Genius — we thought we’d provide an audio-visual supplement. Below, you’ll find a Spotify playlist we call “Perfume Genius Essentials,” culled from his three albums, LearningPut Your Back N 2 It, and his recent tour de force, the magnificent, etheral Too Bright.

The playlist is followed by the first three music videos from Too Bright, “Queen,” “Grid” and “Fool,” all of which give you a good idea of the unapologetic flamboyance with which Hadreas approaches both his work and his Perfume Genius persona. As a coda, we’ve included the video for “Hood,” a two-minute knock-out featuring the slight, slender Hadreas being tenderly fussed over by a gorgeous hunk of beefcake — late gay porn star Arpad Miklos. It’s provocative, stunning, and wonderfully, richly gay. Which pretty much describes the music of Perfume Genius.
