Waylon Smithers will finally, officially come out to Mr. Burns on this season of the The Simpsons.

Smithers’ love for his skeletal, billionaire boss has long been a source of humor for the show, from double entendres to less-than-subtle references to outright declarations of love. For 27 years, fans have watched as Smithers fantasized about Mr. Burns reciprocating his unrequited love, such as the elaborate dream sequence in “Marge Gets a Job,” or Mr. Burns popping out of his birthday cake in “Rosebud.”

In an interview with TVLineSimpsons showrunner Al Jean confirmed that Smithers would finally tell Mr. Burns his sexuality.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” Jean said. “We deal with that in two episodes…. We actually do a lot with Smithers this year. He gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

Whether Smithers will move on to loving someone else — producers have often joked that Smithers is “Burns-sexual” not homosexual — remains to be seen. However, let’s all remember a wonderful moment from “Brush With Greatness,” when Marge asks Smithers why he puts up with Mr. Burns’ awful nature.

“Actually, I value every moment we’re together,” Smithers replies, “from when I squeeze his orange juice in the morning, to when I tuck him in at night.”
