A transgender woman was stabbed in the city’s Trinidad neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon.

As first reported by NBC 4, officers responded to reports of a stabbing in the 1500 block of West Virginia Avenue NE shortly after noon. When police arrived on scene, the victim managed to get to 13th and Bryant Streets, NE, a few blocks away, but police are not sure how. She was conscious and breathing, but had been stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest.

Local transgender activist Earline Budd, who knows the victim, says the woman is in her 30s. She was transported to Washington Medstar Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The case remains under investigation, but police say it’s too early to know whether the victim’s gender identity played a role in the attack. FOX 5 DC is reporting that police are searching for the suspect, whom they describe as a large black man with a beard, driving a gray Nissan or Honda.

Tuesday’s stabbing marks the second violent crime directed against a transgender person in the past few months. Deeniquia “Dee Dee” Dodds, 22, was shot in the early morning hours of July 4 near the 200 block of Division Avenue, NE. Dodds was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center and remained on life support until nine days later, when she was declared dead.
