Baltimore’s Everyman Theatre is currently staging a new playful and comedic take on the Jane Austen classic from Kate Hamill, the Wall Street Journal‘s Playwright of the Year in 2017 who was also one of the nation’s top five most-produced playwrights in pre-pandemic 2019.

Hamill is making her mark with fresh twists on classics, with adaptations of The Odyssey, The Scarlet Letter, and A Christmas Carol currently in development.

For Everyman, Hamill offers a “decidedly female” revamp of Sense and Sensibility that, according to the theater company’s Vincent M. Lancisi, “remains remarkably faithful to the source material for all those die-hard Austen fans, while also adding an irreverent and invigorating kick that’s sure to bring a smile to our audiences’ faces.”

Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, Sense and Sensibility follows the misfortunes of the Dashwood sisters after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable.

In Everyman’s production, directed by Susanna Gellertand, Megan Anderson plays sensible Elinor while Katie Kleiger is her hypersensitive sister Marianne.

They’re joined by Deborah Hazlett as their mother Mrs. Dashwood and Hanna Kelly as the youngest Dashwood sister Margaret, plus Zack Powell, Jefferson A. Russell, Tony Nam, and Bruce Randolph Nelson.

Runs through May 1. Video On Demand streaming available from April 22 to May 15.

Everyman is located at 315 West Fayette Street in Baltimore. Tickets are $29 to $69. Call 410-752-2208 or visit www.everymantheatre.org.
