Most nights at 6 p.m., the Kennedy Center presents a free, live performance or screening, the majority of which are streamed live and posted online for later viewing, all through its Millennium Stage programming.

The lineup is impressive month in and month out, although some months are extra. Such is the case with the scheduled events for November, the highlights of which start with “Evening of Comedy: Emma Willmann,” a show featuring an acclaimed lesbian stand-up comedian and actress (Netflix’s The Lineup, CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) originally from Maine, performing a show that will not be livestreamed (11/4).

Toward the end of the month, comes the post-Thanksgiving “Cathy & Marcy’s Family Music Party,” a concert featuring two-time Grammy Award-winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, a married duo of multi-instrumentalists who will perform from their latest album for children and families, Dancin’ In The Kitchen: songs for ALL families (11/25).

Other performance highlights include The Martha Redbone Roots Project featuring the Native- and African-American vocalist/composer/educator broadening the boundaries of American Roots music with her unique gumbo of folk, blues, and gospel (11/9); Gaby Moreno, a Guatemalan native, winner of the 2013 Latin Grammy as Best New Artist as well as Grand Prize of the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, known for an original blend of jazz, soul, blues, and early rock, as well as the Emmy-nominated co-writer of the theme song to NBC’s Parks and Recreation (11/19); Cimafunk, an Afro-Cuban rockstar who is redefining contemporary Cuban music, Afro-Latin identity, and the fusion of Black cultures (11/26, Terrace Theater); and Becky Hill, a percussive dancer, choreographer, and educator rooted in Appalachian music and dance who was a 2021 Strathmore Artist-in-Residence (11/30).

Finally, the Millennium Stage presents three notable “Extraordinary Cinema” screenings, all in the Justice Forum in the REACH, including The Neutral Ground, director CJ Hunt’s documentary about New Orleans’ fight over monuments and America’s troubled Lost Cause history (11/6); Miss Lillian: More Than A President’s Mother, a docudrama about the life of Lillian Carter, featuring interviews from assorted friends and family, including her son, former President Jimmy Carter, and reenactments of scenes from the early civil rights activist, nurse, entrepreneur, and all-around “fierce” woman as portrayed by actress Carol Swarbrick (11/20); and Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song, a feature-length documentary with never-before-seen archival materials offering a portrait of the late Cohen as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn (11/27).
