A Florida woman has been arrested on a felony child abuse charge after allegedly cutting a young family member with a knife upon discovering messages indicating he is gay.
According to South Florida TV station WPLG, police began investigating Grether Leidy Guadarramas Pena, 41, after the boy told a teacher what had happened at his home on March 14. The teacher then reported the incident to authorities.
An arrest report from the Florida City Police Department states that the boy — whose age was not specified — told detectives his brother discovered Discord messages about his sexual orientation and took the computer away. The brother then gave it to another family member, who “made him stand facing the wall” until Guadarramas arrived home.
“Once [Guadarramas] arrived, she observed ‘gay’ things on his Discord account,” an officer wrote in the report. “She then grabbed him by the arm and took him into the kitchen.”
The boy told police that Guadarramas “grabbed a knife and held his arm against the counter,” calling for another family member to hold his hand down, according to the report. The person initially complied but pushed her away after realizing she was cutting the child with the knife. The individual, who has not been publicly identified, is not facing charges.
Police also allege that Guadarramas cut the boy’s hair with scissors as punishment.
Officers responded to the home on March 18, but Guadarramas and the other family member “refused to speak” about the incident. She was later arrested and charged with one count of felony child abuse.
On March 19, a Miami-Dade County Court judge found probable cause for the charge against Guadarramas, who remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
A Manhattan real estate broker allegedly called ICE to report that his boyfriend -- an Irish national and construction executive -- was undocumented in an effort to seize control of their Tribeca apartment.
The boyfriend, 46-year-old Patrick Moran, is a conservation and preservation expert who has overseen projects for New York City's Carnegie Hall, the American Museum of Natural History, and the New York Federal Reserve. He claims the lovers' spat stemmed from "stress" over the renovation of their $4.3 million apartment, which dragged on for more than four years.
Two men in Kenya have been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attacking and robbing two gay men -- a rare instance of accountability in a country where homosexuality remains criminalized.
The defendants -- referred to in court proceedings as "Abel Meli & Another" -- were sentenced on a charge of robbery with violence on March 3 at the Milimani Law Courts in Kenya's capital, Nairobi.
The attack occurred in April 2023, when the victims -- identified by the British newspaper The Guardian using the pseudonyms Eric Anyango and Joe Ochieng, both in their mid-20s -- arranged to meet a man with whom Ochieng had been communicating on Facebook. Shortly after arriving at the man's home, three other men appeared and began attacking them.
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked to leave a Little Rock restaurant, with the owner citing concerns from LGBTQ employees over her political positions.
On March 13, Sanders dined at The Croissanterie, arriving unannounced with two guests, staff members, and her State Police Executive Protection Detail.
Her party had been seated for more than an hour and had already paid and tipped when she said the restaurant owner asked a member of her security detail to have them leave.
