Uber is doing a very nice thing.
Through Monday, June 20, at 11:59 p.m., the company is offering free rides to and from locations in D.C. that “are important to the history and culture of the local LGBT community.”
“Like people across the world, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders at a gay nightclub in Orlando,” read a post on their local blog. “The world is a brighter and better place when we are all free to be ourselves. And we want to bring people together, no matter who you are or where you’re from.”
Here’s the deal. When you get picked up or dropped off by an uberX or uberPOOL to any of the locations listed below, the service will pick up the tab, up to $20 per ride. It’s limited to 2 rides per Uber user, but it’s perfect for a round trip to, say, the nightclubs Town or Cobalt, or the bars JR.’s, Number 9, Nellies, or Freddie’s.
And it’s not just bars — the D.C. Center, SMYAL, Whitman-Walker and Casa Ruby are also on the list.
Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it is somewhat odd Uber did not choose to include at least three iconic gay bars on the list — The DC Eagle (among the most historic leather bars in the nation), Ziegfeld’s/Secrets, the Green Lantern and The Fireplace. And at least one of included bar — Phase 1 — has been closed for months. Still, it’s a very generous donation on the company’s part — one that it is making in several cities across the country — so we applaud and appreciate that.
Find the full list of Uber’s eligible D.C.-area locations below.
Update: Uber notified Metro Weekly on Sunday afternoon that the D.C. Eagle and The Fireplace had been added to the list of eligible locations.

About 100 members of Taipei's LGBTQ community protested outside a local police station on October 4 after officers raided a gay bar, taking 51 people in for questioning and arresting its owner.
The raid on Commander D, a gay bar in Taipei's Wanhua district, took place on the afternoon of October 3, reports Reuters.
Police precinct spokesman Chen Yu-cheng said officers executed a search warrant for suspected "offenses against public morality." He said the people taken in for questioning were suspected of violating a law prohibiting "wantonly exposing one's naked body or presenting a lascivious posture in a public place or publicly accessible place."
