Brother, Help Thyself to host “Grant Writing 101” workshops
Workshops will be offered in Baltimore on June 4 and D.C. on June 7
Brother, Help Thyself, the organization supporting local LGBTQ and HIV-related nonprofits in the Baltimore and D.C. areas, will host two “Grant Writing 101” workshops for those interested in applying for one of BHT’s coveted grants.
The first workshop is on the evening of Monday, June 4, at Helping Up Mission in Baltimore. The second is on the evening of Thursday, June 7, at the headquarters of Dignity Washington, in the Barracks Row neighborhood.
Every year, local nonprofits are asked to submit grant proposals outlining how much money they’re asking for and how the money will be spent if they are approved for it. Grants are given out at BHT’s annual grant awards ceremony in January.
The aim of the workshops is to offer technical guidance to organizations that need a primer on how to write a grant proposal. Because many of BHT’s beneficiaries are smaller, community-based organizations, they often don’t have the money or the staff capacity to retain a full-time grant writer. As such, they can benefit from this course.
The two workshops also provide BHT an opportunity to introduce the organization’s new Grants Chair, Jackie Adams. Adams, a Baltimore native, previously worked as a grant writer for Chase Brexton Health Care, and currently works in a similar role for the State of Maryland in the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention.
While many grantees are expected to sign up for the classes, the classes are open to the wider public, meaning attendees are not required to have received money in the past, nor do they have apply for a BHT grant at any future time.
BHT will begin accepting applications for its next grant cycle on June 30. Completed applications are due by Aug. 31.
“We’re all in this together, and I believe we should all be sharing our expertise instead of holding it close as some sort of state secret,” BHT President Andrew McCarty said in a statement. “BHT is proud of our record of bringing people together — because none of us really succeeds at the cost of — or without — the other. We’re stronger together!”
