Mister Marcus Luncheon

Local leather community remembers icon at Playbill

Washingtonians who cannot travel to attend Marcus Hernandez’s memorial on Saturday, Nov. 21, in his hometown San Francisco, are invited to gather and eat lunch at the Playbill Café, 1409 14th St. NW, on the same day.

Hernandez was beloved and known in the LGBT community as ”Mister Marcus,” a columnist on the gay leather community for the Bay Area Reporter, for nearly 40 years. He died Oct. 8 of complications from diabetes and arteriosclerosis at the age of 77.

Mr. and Ms. Capital Leather Pride, Matt Bamford and Jackie Thompson, organized the Playbill Café lunch.

”For those who didn’t know him, Mister Marcus was a married man with children who came out of the closet and left his family, which is hard, and began writing for the Bay Area Reporter,” Bamford says. Hernandez traveled to Washington frequently for leather events, including serving as a judge in the Centaur MC’s Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend contest.

Ten percent of the luncheon proceeds will be used to help preserve Hernandez’s leather memorabilia in the Leather Archives and Museum, said Bamford.

”Mister Marcus has been collecting leather memorabilia for almost 40 years,” he says. ”He had two storage units filled with awards, sashes, writings, pictures and stuff that we are all trying to raise funds for.”’
