Back by popular demand after enchanting Boston audiences in 2018, Manual Cinema returns with another feat of innovative, cinematic storytelling. "The End of TV" depicts the promise and decline of the American rust belt through the stories of Flo and Louise, both former employees of a local auto plant. Flo is an elderly white woman succumbing to dementia as the memories of her life become tangled with television commercials and the “call now” demands of QVC. Louise, a young black woman, meets Flo when she takes a job as a Meals-on-Wheels driver. An unlikely relationship grows as Flo approaches the end of her life and Louise prepares for the invention of a new one. In "The End of TV", the ingenious artists of Manual Cinema cast a theatrical spell through live-action silhouettes, video feeds, overhead projection and a five-piece band performing an original score. Set in the '90s, the show is awash in the decade's nostalgia, delightfully re-creating the ubiquitous media that was pumped into homes across the country. The story of Flo and Louise's friendship dovetails the Technicolor promises of TV advertisements and the decline of a Midwestern town to weave a portrait of true human connection. See this "fascinating theatergoing experience" ("New Haven Register") at Emerson Paramount Center. [less-]

From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, a girls' indoor soccer team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals, "The Wolves" -- Sarah DeLappe's award-winning first play -- premiered off-Broadway at The Playwrights Realm. Set in a local hair salon, "Shear Madness" is a hilarious whodunit with "you" as a central character and jokes and lines as up-to-date as the morning's news. When the beauty parlor's landlady is murdered at the outset, a blend of mystery and improvisational theater ensues, with audience members called upon to make sense of the clues, question the actors and ultimately solve the crime. This award-winning Boston institution, ongoing at the Charles Playhouse since 1980, boasts new clues and ripped-from-the-headlines humor every night, resulting in rollicking repeat visits, and has spawned 50 different productions in cities as far-flung as Barcelona, Rome, Paris, Tel Aviv, Melbourne and Johannesburg. When the Donnellys gather to divide their belongings after the sale of their oceanfront mansion, both an internal and literal storm brew. As this brood of famous, longing-to-be-famous, and mess of a Caucasian family comes together with their POC personal assistant, Charlotte, some really really really really really complicated and totally unique secrets are revealed over white wine. A satirical takedown coupled with moments of disorienting sincerity, "Two Mile Hollow" explores with brutality, awe, and compassion the age old theater genre of affluent white families retreating to their big houses for a weekend of secrets and fights. Only this time, none of the white characters are played by white actors. "Two Mile Hollow" was produced as a simultaneous world premiere by First Floor Theater (Chicago), Mixed Blood Theatre/Theater Mu (Minneapolis), Ferocious Lotus (San Francisco) and Artists At Play (Los Angeles). It was named one of the Top 15 Plays on the 2017 Kilroys List. [less-]

This glam rock musical phenomenon follows a transgender East German rock singer named Hedwig and her band, The Angry Inch. Through an electrifying rock score and a wickedly hilarious book by John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig enchants her audience with the gritty details of her life. She recalls growing up in East Berlin as a "girly boy" named Hansel who undergoes a botched sex-change operation after falling in love with an American G.I. Come along as she journeys to America, has a tumultuous relationship with rock star Tommy Gnosis and rises to Z-list fame. The notorious musical began its life off-Broadway before gaining a cult following through hundreds of subsequent productions around the world. In 2014, "Hedwig" made its Tony Award-winning Broadway debut. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" now jabs a stiletto through the heart of Concord at The Umbrella Center for the Arts. Don't miss this uplifting story for anyone who’s ever felt different. [less-]

At first glance the giant, surrealistic structures look like a recipe for a broken limb or even a maiming. Then the performers start climbing, rocking and leaping off them. And if they weren't so mind-bogglingly good at it, you'd probably suggest they seek professional help. But they are, and so you just sit there with your mouth agape as you take it all in. They're Diavolo Dance Theater, and if you didn't see them completely blow away the judges on "America's Got Talent" -- and even if you did -- you're going to want to see them live onstage. Led by Jacques Heim, who created "Cirque du Soleil's Ka", Diavolo blurs the lines between dance, acrobatics and parkour for one goosebumps-raising experience called "architecture in motion." You can experience it yourself when Diavolo comes to set Hartford's Bushnell in motion. [less-]

Something BIG is coming when the imaginary beasts ensemble returns to the Charlestown Working Theater with "Paul Bunyan and the Winter of the Blue Snow". Now, most folks have heard of the legendary woodsman, Paul Bunyan, but they probably haven’t heard his story told quite like this! When we first meet our young hero, he has just left the family home to begin his trek in search of the fabled Candy Mountains. Paul soon learns that solitary journeys can seem cold and lonesome, until an encounter with the Spirit of the Blue Moon introduces Paul to an entire crew of misfit companions, including the fabled Babe, the Blue Ox, and the trusty dog Niagara. Little do they know what lies in wait! For the icy King Zero (a.k.a. Old Man Winter), is determined to diminish Paul’s legend and to do-away with the spring by turning our heroes’ adventure-of-a-lifetime into a catastrophe of epic proportions! [less-]

The disco-fueled interactive dance party known as "The Donkey Show", very loosely inspired by Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", puts you smack in the middle of the action in a funky Cambridge lounge setting. Featuring two full bars and a dance floor, OBERON's Diane Paulus-created wonderland was inspired by Studio 54 in its heyday, when celebrities and art icons would mix and mingle with kids from Queens, and the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack would be shaking the speakers. While you -- and the rest of the audience -- drink, dance to disco classics or just check out the action, the motley crew of characters in this glammed-up, sex-fueled version of Shakespeare's play re-enact the hilariously chaotic tale of a magic elixir that wreaks havoc at the nightclub. But it's mostly just a cool boogie-filled bash. [less-]
