Prop 8 Protest

D.C. joins national movement with Nov. 15 rally

”This is not a California issue. This is an issue of equality across America,” states a release regarding planned Nov. 15 protests against California’s newly passed Proposition 8, a constitutional ban on same-sex marriages that trumps an earlier California Supreme Court ruling that extended equal marriage rights to gays and lesbians.

The D.C. March for Equal Rights, organized by local activist Kellan Baker, is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. near the U.S. Capitol. Attendants are asked to gather at the northern end of the Capitol Reflecting Pool, near the intersection of Third Street SW and Madison Drive NW.

A march from that starting point is scheduled to begin at approximately 2 p.m., with participants proceeding along Constitution Avenue toward the White House, gathering in the northeast corner of Lafayette Square for a rally.

Due to a planned protest in conjunction with the G8/G20 Economic Crisis Summit near the same location, protesters of Proposition 8 should not occupy the sidewalk fronting the White House, organizers advise.

Those taking metro to the protest should be aware that the nearby Judiciary Square station will be closed Nov. 15. The Federal Center SW station, also nearby, will be open.
