Focus on Homophobia

Town-hall event to examine homophobia in the black community

”People should come expecting some solutions,” Sampson McCormick says of the upcoming ”Town Hall on Homophobia in the Black Community.” ”They should come expecting to meet other people who want to do something about it.

”The purpose of our forum is to do something different,” says McCormick, organizer and moderator of the event. ”A lot of times we hear of people who get beaten or killed as a result of homophobia, and we get people who say, ‘This is enough’ and ‘This has to stop.’ But too often we don’t see anything done about it.”

Panelists include Brian Watson, director of programs at Transgender Health Empowerment (T.H.E.) and president of the DC Coalition of Black GLBT Men and Women; Clarence Fluker, of the Mayor’s Office of GLBT Affairs; Carlene Cheatam, also of the DC Coalition; Rev. Dyan Abena McCray; and Monet Dupree, health educator and office manager at T.H.E.

”They’re people who have the same vision, who work tirelessly against homophobia, who still have a very positive insight on how we can combat it.”

The town-hall event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the Charles Sumner School lecture hall, 1201 17th St. NW.
