Goapele at The Birchmere

GoapeleBay

Two years ago, the Oakland-based straight neo-soul singer Goapele headlined the Capital Pride Women’s Pride Concert. Now, the noted human rights activist, whose name means “move forward” in the Southern Africa language Tswana, returns to the area in support of last year’s Break of Dawn. Here’s hoping she also performs “Running,” her stirring new song from the Sparkle movie soundtrack. Friday, Aug. 17, at 7:30 p.m. The Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. Tickets are $29.50. Call 703-549-7500 or visit birchmere.com.
