"The New York Times" has called them "first-rate" and the "Washington Post" hailed their 2014 appearance at The Kennedy Center as "stunning." Now the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir comes to D.C.'s National City Christian Church to commemorate three classical music giants in a program that showcases works by famed Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and two leading Estonian composers: Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis (2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Sibelius' birth, and the 80th and 85th anniversaries of Pärt and Tormis' births, respectively). The multiple Grammy-winning ensemble has wowed audiences with their supreme clarity, power and purity of tone, and their sumptuous voices are perfectly suited for National City Christian Church's warm, echo-rich hall. Hear the best of Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Colombia, conducted by a Spanish legend, when Jesús López-Cobos joins the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center for two vibrant programs. Thursday is all about the Iberian Peninsula, with Portuguese singers Camané and Carminho singing in the fado tradition. Characterized by mournful tunes and melancholic lyrics, fado has been called the soul music of Portugal. In addition to songs from the two fadistas, Thursday will also feature Joaquín Turina's "Danzas fantásticas" and Isaac Albéniz's "Iberia" suite. On Friday and Saturday, the sounds of the New World mix with the Old when Colombian soprano Juanita Lascarro joins the orchestra for Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras" No. 5 and Spanish pianist Javier Perianes plays Manuel de Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain". This program will also feature Turina's "Danzas fantásticas" and Albéniz's "Iberia" suite. [less-]

Skype-like videophones and scuba gear make a prescient appearance in George Bernard Shaw's ambitious five-part 1922 play cycle, "Back to Methuselah", one of the very first works of science fiction-fantasy ever to appear in a theater. The Washington Stage Guild is in the middle of its vast undertaking to produce these rarely-seen plays by the Nobel Prize-winning satirist ("Pygmalion, Major Barbara, Saint Joan"), which started with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and posit a future in the year 31,920 in which mankind has evolved towards immortality. Now, with "The Thing Happens", we're a mere 250 years in the future, where a few have found success in extending their natural lifespan. But this zany comedy finds some growing pains still exist, especially in terms of romance and relationships. That's followed by "Tragedy of an Elderly Gentlemen", a fantasy set in A.D. 3000, where short-lived people and those who are centuries old face some monumental choices. Experience the wit and wisdom of Shaw's glimpse into the future at D.C.'s Undercroft Theatre. [less-]

How often do you get to say you sat down and picked the brain of a genius, let alone three? Well, that's what you're in for at Sixth & I's "Creative Matters", in which three recipients of the MacArthur Foundation's "genius" grant come together to talk about their pioneering work and the power of creativity. From Bill Drayton, who founded a network of "social entrepreneurs" dedicated to tackling society's most pressing problems with innovation, to Liz Lerman a choreographer whose work has had dancers in the tunnels of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, to John Rich, a former Boston Public Health Commission doctor focusing on the neglected inner city population, this eclectic panel brings together boundary-pushing thinkers from across the board for a fascinating collision of perspectives.
