Matthea Harvey is the author of five poetry books and two delightfully quirky children's books. Her poetry looks at politics and today's culture and her latest book, "If the Tabloids Are True What Are You?" received rave reviews for its imaginative mix of poetry and art. Claudia Rankine writes about racism and the idea feeling of invisible in her latest book, "Citizen: An American Lyric" and is known also for her plays and unique blends of poetry, essay and TV imagery. Award-winning writer Zachary Lazar made a splash in 2008 with "Sway", his novel exploring the '60s counterculture, which included real-life figures like the Rolling Stones as characters. His recently released book, "I Pity the Poor Immigrant", similarly features Meyer Lansky, the Jewish-American gangster who spent two years in Israel in the early '70s, trying to avoid charges of tax evasion. Filled with intricately connected vignettes, Lazar's work ties Lansky's story to that of the ancient King David, not to mention an American journalist who gets caught up in the dangerous dealings of the Israeli mafia and who discovers a dark side to her own Jewish heritage. Lazar appears as part of the Hyman S. & Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival. [less-]

It was a pairing so strange it could only be true. "Fetch Clay, Make Man" tells the story of the remarkable relationship between Muhammad Ali and Stepin Fetchit. Set mostly in 1965, Ali -- who until his recent membership into the Nation of Islam was known as Cassius Clay -- is winning both bouts in the boxing ring and arguments about the ability and dignity of African Americans. Meanwhile, the faded Fetchit represents an older, uglier era. Having once made millions playing racist stereotypes on the silver screen in the '20s, '30s and '40s, the truly talented actor is now broke and half-forgotten. Yet, in the days leading up to one of Ali's most anticipated matchups, the prizefighter and the movie star form an unlikely and revealing friendship. [less-]

Witness all the antics of America's favorite dizzy redhead and her Cuban crooner hubby as beloved '50s sitcom "I Love Lucy" is transformed into a live musical. Step back in time onto the Desilu soundstage where a charming host will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the latest hi-fi technology that makes this new thing called "television" possible. Then, the show starts, and Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel are up to their hilarious antics in the familiar cozy surroundings of their New York apartment building and at the famed Tropicana Nightclub, where The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra delights with "Babalu" and other Cuban dance numbers. In between scenes, the Crystaltone Singers perform live advertising jingles from the show's newest sponsors (Brylcreem, anyone?) in perfect '50s-style harmony. This is your chance to be a member of the studio audience at the taping of two classic "I Love Lucy" episodes -- "The Benefit" (Lucy agrees to get Ricky to perform in a benefit for her women's club, as long as she's the star of the show) and "Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined" (drops from the eye doctor make Lucy's vision blurry just as she's about to have a jitterbug audition for a movie role). Influential but largely forgotten architect Horace Gifford led a modernist transformation of New York's Fire Island during the '60s and '70s, designing beach homes that reflected the "oasis of free love" of the pre-AIDS, post-Stonewall era. Generally modest in size, these homes entice with intimacy rather than ostentation, and are artfully wedded to their sites. After a three-year search for Gifford's original drawings and slides, Christopher Rawlins, principal architect of New York-based Rawlins Design, has produced "Fire Island Modernist: Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction", a beautiful book chronicling the life of this underappreciated and complex architect whose body of work stands for a lost generation. Rawlins will lead a discussion of Gifford's legacy, followed by a book signing. Come early for the National Building Museum's "House & Home" exhibition. [less-]

This warmhearted, humorous play that won Alfred Uhry the 1988 Pulitzer looks at the unexpected friendship between a fiercely independent Southern white woman and her African-American chauffeur. It's 1948, and after Daisy, an elderly Jewish widow who lives in Atlanta, has a driving mishap in which her automobile is demolished, her son hires Hoke Colburn to be her driver. Initially resistant, Miss Daisy gradually starts to accept Hoke over time, and an unlikely friendship begins to grow between the two. Ultimately a sweet tale of the transformative power of true friendship, the play also touches on the racism and prejudice that permeated the South at the time. Acclaimed Washington stage actors Nancy Robinette (called the Meryl Streep of Washington theater) and Craig Wallace return to Ford's to perform in this beloved classic. [less-]
