With Washington's marriage equality law going into effect on March 3, up to 100 couples made the trek to the D.C. courthouse to submit their applications for marriage licenses. District law requires a three-business-day waiting period for applications for wedding licenses – legally recognized same-sex marriages will begin on Tuesday, March 9.
The celebratory scene included D.C. Councilmember David Catania (I-At Large), who introduced and shepherded the legislation, as well as local LGBT-supportive clergy who broke into song when confronted with the vocal bigotry of the infamous anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.
