Craig Bowman Leaves National Youth Advocacy Coalition
Craig A. Bowman, longtime executive director of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, a not-for-profit GLBT organization, announced his resignation from the position on Thursday, April 26. Bowman has concluded his tenure of nearly seven years to expand ”his role as founder and president of Common Ground Consulting LLC,” according to a NYAC press release.
”I’ve been extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work in an organization that strives every day to do more than seems possible in support of courageous, passionate and powerful young people, an organization willing to work and fight everyday to achieve social justice and an agenda that is manifest with truth, compassion, community and hope,” Bowman stated in the release.
Before NYAC, Bowman, a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, served as the executive director of the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL). Bowman has also worked as an adjunct professor for grad students studying the International Training and Education Program in the sociology department of American University. He is credited for many of NYAC’s accomplishments including raising more than $115,000 to aid the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. According to Aaron Chandler, board vice president at NYAC, Bowman has raised more than $7 million ”for our activities.”
”Craig’s dedication and commitment to protecting and fighting for the rights of LBGTQ young people has been truly empowering,” Caeden Dempsey, board president at NYAC, says in the release.
”Under his dynamic leadership, we’ve been able to bring issues concerning LBGTQ youth out of the shadows and into the mainstream. His contributions to NYAC as an activist, advocate and visionary in shaping a safe and just environment for young people are inestimable.”
The group’s Director of Health Programs, Lara Crutsinger-Perry, will serve as NYAC’s interim executive director until a permanent replacement is found. According to the press release, Crutsinger-Perry has expressed that she is not interested in becoming the NYAC’s permanent executive director.
