Chaos Space Emptied

Leftover furniture, kitchen equipment put on curb

Passerby reported last week that the remaining furnishings from Club Chaos at 1603 17th St. NW were deposited on the curb, including the club’s signature red couches and assorted paraphernalia, causing speculation that an eviction was underway.

The venue, in business for roughly a decade, closed earlier this year after an order from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board forced owner Carlos Aguilar to stop producing Chaos’ regular events. The venue was licensed as a restaurant.

The Dupont Circle Citizens Association and 17 independent residents protested Chaos’ license renewal in the summer of 2007, citing that ”peace, order, quiet, cleanliness and public safety problems remain unacceptable especially when Club Chaos closes at 2 a.m. on weeknights, and 3 a.m. on weekends.” At the time, Aguilar said he would be moving Chaos to a new location.

Aguilar did not return calls to Metro Weekly seeking comment. Susan Haas, a leasing agent at Bernstein Management Corporation, which manages the 17th Street property that housed Chaos, declined to discuss the situation, saying only, ”They are no longer in the space.”
