My Lesbian Vampire Movie … all gone wrong

”The Last Sect was the fourth film on Peace Arch’s Hamilton schedule. As we approached our production date, it became clear to the people on the ground that the original budget money was dwindling, and some below-the-line costs would be cut. Our film, originally scheduled for a 20-day shoot (the first three films took that long), would have to be shot in 15 days…. But no, we were told to rejig the script to accommodate the cast-up of a relatively peripheral character: the vampire hunter, Van Helsing. The eventual shortlist consisted of Christopher Lee (the quintessential Dracula), character actor Pete Postlethwaite and David Carradine (of Kung Fu fame). Lee was 83; Carradine was 69; Pete Postlethwaite was Pete Postlethwaite. There was no best-case scenario. In the end, Webb went with David Carradine, and my sexy movie got appreciably less so.”

Script writer David Robbeson telling how his hopes for a sexy, undeground lesbian vampire movie didn’t quite turn out that way due to restrictions on time, budget, a single Toronto location, and the addition of actor David Carradine. The result, ‘The Last Sect’ which you may have seen on Showtime (or YouTube). (Toronto Life)
