NJ Judge rules against gay couple in custody dispute: Sister surrogate recognized as mother

”The surrogacy contract is based on principles that are directly contrary to the objectives of our laws. It guarantees the separation of a child from its mother; it looks to adoption regardless of suitability; it totally ignores the child; it takes the child from the mother regardless of her wishes and maternal fitness.”

Finding of a New Jersey court that will allow the surrogate mother of a gay couple’s twin girls to pursue custody. The woman who bore the children, Angela Robinson, is the sister of one of the gay men, Donald Robinson Hollingsworth, and she is not genetically linked to either of the twins. Her brother’s gay male partner, Sean Hollingsworth, provided the sperm, and the eggs were anonymously donated.(NY Times)

In a somewhat similar, but unrelated case, a Vermont Judge found in favor of a lesbian seeking child custody from her ex-lover who lives in Virginia. News reports, though, say that the birth mother, Lisa Miller, has disappeared with their daughter. The case between Miller and her ex, Janet Jenkins, has been quite difficult, and Miller has become something of a cause célèbre by conservative media outlets since Miller has renounced her former lesbian life and has allegedly converted to an Evangelical religion.
