Gay sports bar robbed at gunpoint in DC

”Police Alert- ROBBERY (GUN) ESTABLISHMENT_NELLY’S SPORTS BAR: 900 U ST NW: 2B/M’S LAST SEEN IN A WHITE VEH UNKNOW MAKE AND MODEL DO NOT TAKE ACTION CALL 911 W/EVENT #I20100197796.”

A police notice taken from the neighborhood blog Borderstan. It reports that Nellie’s Sports Bar, a favorite spot for lesbian and gay locals and sports fans, was hit by two armed robbers on Monday afternoon around 1:30pm. The increasingly popular U Street Corridor has grown in recent years to become one of the Washington’s most vibrant entertainment hotspots. Two dedicated gay bars — Nellie’s and Town Danceboutique — add welcomed diversity to a mixture of other club goers, theater attendees, restaurants diners, Metro riders, and residents from nearby luxury condos and townhomes. Unfortunately, Borderstan reports, there’s been a coinciding uptick in armed crimes despite an overall drop in crime. Staying alert is always recommended, as is sticking with the subway for travel to and from U Street. (Borderstan)
