Proposition 8 recall petition falls short: No vote on California’s gay marriage in 2010

”We didn’t meet our targets and that’s all I’m going to say…. [Lack of support from other gay groups] definitely sapped the volunteer energy.”

John Henning, Director of ”Love Honor Cherish‘ which had hoped to put Proposition 8 on the ballot in 2010. That infamous, anti-gay marriage law passed in California by a fairly small margin in late 2008. However, most larger gay rights organizations did not support this recall effort, for it  seemed, to some, this was more of an angry reaction than a carefully planned political plan. The primary reason for the lack of support appears to have been because voter sentiment hasn’t significantly changed in just a year and a half. Most of the support for Prop 8 was driven by socially conservative churches, and those large, well-funded organizations haven’t exactly gone away. A couple of recent California polls indicated support for same-sex marriage is indeed slightly higher today, but not by a significantly solid margin. (SF Chronicle)
