Germany recognizes gay marriage from Canada as ”registered partnership”

“The court agreed with the view of the authorities that he could not be registered as ‘married’ because a marriage under German law requires different-sex couples. However the plaintiff could demand registry as a life partner because Canadian gay marriage largely corresponds under German law to a registered partnership.”

Portion of a statement released by an administrative court in Berlin, Germany. It’s reported that Andreas Boettcher, a German man, married another Spanish man in Montreal, Canada in 2001, but that when Boettcher returned to Germany, he was listed as single. This new court ruling allows Boettcher to be listed under Germany’s ”registered partnership” law, since the country does not yet have legalized marriage for same-sex couples. (Telegraphy.co.uk)
