Non-fatal shooting in Northeast leads to arrest

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced on Friday, June 4, that members of MPD’s 6th District are investigating an assault with a dangerous weapon, which occurred on the 400 block of Eastern Avenue NE during the early hours of Friday morning.

In an e-mail sent to particular members of the LGBT community only, including the co-chairs of Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) and Transgender Health Empowerment (THE), the MPD states: “The initial investigation reveals there may be a bias motivation to the crime. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. An arrest has been made in this case.”

Earline Budd of THE, who forwarded the MPD e-mail to Metro Weekly on Monday, June 7, confirmed that the victim was a member of the transgender community, though she was unaware of the victim’s name.

“The reason why this is critical information is because it’s happening all around against transgender people,” says Budd. “It’s not just an isolated incident.”
