Lesbian-only guesthouse now welcomes others in tough economy

”In Alabama, it’s not one human family. It’s don’t ask, don’t tell…. The culture here in Key West is so different from back home. People don’t realize what a treat it is for us. Pearl’s is our little bit of heaven.”

A Key West visitor who is staying at Pearl’s Rainbow, a 38-room guesthouse owned by Heather Carruthers.

Carruthers and her late partner opened the resort in 2000 and, until now, has run the establishment for lesbian guests only. However, due to the slow economy, Carruthers is opening up to all types of guests. This Miami Herald article also touches on the waning interest of some gay and lesbian travelers to stay at gay-specific accommodations because most hotel chains are gay friendly today and many businesses cater to gay consumers as well.
