Queerty goes offline: Popular and provocative gay blog shuts down

”Some five and a half years ago I launched my second blog, Queerty, after seeing an opening for a new type of LGBT site. It joined Jossip, and would [soon] be followed by two sister sites. That journey has come to an end: Queerty is closing…. Sadly, last week, in a scenario that began with some technical headaches, has ended with [353 Media] opting not to continue operating the site.”

David Hauslib, founder of Queerty.com, as quoted in an e-mail that was circulated to bloggers and media outlets. (The New Civil Rights)

Queerty was a gay news blog that many turned to for the very latest in cultural tidbits that affected the gay community. The five-year-old site also featured pictures of male models.

Despite its popularity (“a million visitors a month,” Hauslib says), the writing style and approach was often considered snippy and, at times, the posts seemed to revel in the misfortunes of both gay rights opponents and members of the gay community itself. Many of the comments posted by Queerty readers were equally fiery and full of vitriol.

Still, the site’s original news contributions were considered valuable, and the site certainly served as a model for many other gay news blogs that followed.
