ESPN explores the gay life of college basketball player Will Sheridan
”Maybe there’s a kid out there who doesn’t think he’s OK, and he can look at me and say, ‘OK, he played college basketball. He went overseas. He has a music career and now he’s living his life. Now he’s who he wants to be and he’s happy and confident and comfortable.’ It’s my responsibility to talk about that.”’
Will Sheridan, 26, former basketball player for Villanova University, sharing his coming out story with ESPN. People interviewed for the long web article included a surprised roommate who says it didn’t matter, a coach who says he was oblivious to Sheridan’s sexual orientation, and Sheridan’s parents. His mother said she was “disappointed” by the loss of expected daughter-in-law and grandchildren. And his father says he still hopes Sheridan will “change.” But both of them say they love and appreciate their grown son. (ESPN)
Sheridan told ESPN in a broadcast interview that he didn’t know about about Phonenix Suns‘ President Rick Welts coming out as gay earlier this week. Regarding the anti-gay taunts and chants used by sports fans at games, Sheridan says:
”I’ve heard everything…. I wasn’t really focused on that too much. I’m trying to win games…. You’re not really concerned about what the crowd is saying. Especially when we were successful…. All you can say to the haters is, ‘Hi, we’re winning and you’re not.”’
Sheridan has also launched a career in house music which includes an EP released late last year called Ngoma
