Gay singer Chely Wright publicly supports Blake Shelton over Twitter controversy

Hey, if we all agree that words we use- as public figures matter- then let’s not question @blakeshelton‘s sincerity. He stated his position.

make no mistake, I saw no humor in it. cw RT “@mlelder: @chelywright I thought it was pretty funny myself. I tend to agree with Blake.”

@Brandon_E you’re spot on. Funny or not funny isn’t the point. When public people have an audience, our words and messages matter.

@Brandon_E I know @Blakeshelton wouldn’t want anyone to think that he was suggesting that anti-gay violence is okay. He’s a good guy.

@blakeshelton love love love. #wordshavepower & Blake made it clear that he is lgbt supportive. Yay! Xo

A series of Tweets put out by out gay, country singer Chely Wright regarding a Tweet made earlier in the week by fellow country music star Blake Shelton. (Twitter/ChelyWright)

Shelton’s rewrite of a Shania Twain song could have been interpreted different ways. Some in the gay community took it to be a homophobic threat to any gay man who might touch his butt. However, Shelton later said his intent was to be writing it from a “girls point of view… Shania Twain.”

With some assistance from GLAAD, Shelton tried to make amends for the “misinterpretation.” Selections from Shelton’s Twitter feed follow, including the original post:

Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song.. Any man that tries Touching my behind He’s gonna be a beaten, bleedin’, heaving kind of guy…

Ba! Ha! Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets…. Ha! Ha! If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses…

“@RacheltheRant:You have two lesbian fans in @OmnisexualTwist and me. We balls you! When are you coming to the Omaha area?” And I balls you!

“@becchez: Please make it right! I want 2 like u again.” Ha! Ok try this. Its meant to be from a girls point of view. Thus, “Shania Twain”

Hey y’all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night…

It honestly wasn’t even meant that way… I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere

But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings… I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!

One reason Shelton’s comments could have been read as being insensitive to gay men, was because of a remark he made at the Country Music Awards last month. Shelton furrowed a few brows with a joke in which he related the break-up of actor Jake Gyllenhaal and singer Taylor Swift to Gyllenhaal’s role in the gay cowboy film Brokeback Mountain.
