Google promotes support project for gay youth with TV ad

”Dan Savage, Messenger. The web is what you make it.”

Google, the search engine pioneer and video hosting innovator, released a couple of new commercials this week to promote their web browser Chrome. One of the ads features clips from gay rights advocate Dan Savage and his successful YouTube project called, “It Gets Better.” The ad ran during the Fox TV show “Glee” and is slated to run during other programs, too. It compiles some of the many videos of support that adults have recorded for gay and bullied youth — ordinary people, celebrities, gay, bi, trans, and straight. (Google Chrome)

Savage’s project began with an idea in September 2010 following several high-profile, gay teen suicides. He said then that schools are restricted from providing honest speech about gay issues, and that he felt it was better for people to take their voices directly to teens via the Web.

Google also released a separate “It Gets Better” video back in October featuring stories from several LGBT employees.
