New York town clerk goes “no homo,” resigns rather than issue marriage licenses to gays

With the July 21 debut of marriage equality in New York, plenty of gay and lesbian couples are getting ready to tie the knot. But the impending date is also on the radar of anti-gay forces, especially the National Organization for Marriage — the misnomered organization home to well-known homophobes Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown — which has already announced a series of rallies protesting the first gay marriages in New York City and Albany.

Today Politico reports that rural New York town clerk Laura Fotusky has resigned rather than comply with the state’s new law and provide gay couples with marriage certificates.

“I would be compromising my moral conscience by participating in licensing same-sex couples. … I had to choose between my job and my god. … I just knew that I needed to obey God.”

Fotusky, 56, published her resignation letter on the website of the group New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (a site whose leanings can be teased out from its habit of placing same-sex “marriage” in quotes). She writes, ““The Bible clearly teaches that God created marriage between male and female as a divine gift that preserves families and cultures. Since I love and follow Him, I cannot put my signature on something that is against God.”

Fotusky’s resignation is effective July 21.
