Clint Eastwood libertarian on gay marriage; ‘8’ set to open on Broadway
Clint Eastwood appears in the current issue of GQ with Leonardo DiCaprio. The magazine asked Eastwood (a well-known Hollywood Republican) what he means when he calls himself a “social libertarian” (GQ.com):
”These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! …. They go on and on with all this bullshit about ‘sanctity’ — don’t give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.”
Eastwood is director and producer of the upcoming film “J. Edgar” which stars DiCaprio in yet another mid-20th century historical drama. He plays the powerful FBI head, J. Edgar Hoover, who lead a closeted gay life. According to IMDB, the screenplay was written by Dustin Lance Black who previously wrote the Oscar winning story of Harvey Milk. “J. Edgar” is set to be released in theaters November 9.
Unrelated to the film, Dustin Lance Black has also writted a play about California’s battle over gay marriage called “8.” According to AP, Black says he wanted to include the best arguments over Proposition 8 in the script: “If anything, I think it’s overly fair to the opposition [to gay marriage].” (AP)
The premiere reading will be a benefit and is set for September 19 and will feature a number of big name actors including Morgan Freeman, Cheyenne Jackson, Rob Reiner, Christine Lahti, Marissa Tomei and others. (AFER.org)
