Jimmy Carter now for gay civil marriages
U.S. President Jimmy Carter, 87, told the Huffington Post that he is in favor of civil marriage rights for gays. Previously, the Baptist Democrat had said he supported civil unions but not marriage. In an interview posted this past Monday, HuffPost asked Carter about Biblical reasons being used to reject gay people:
”Homosexuality was well known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. In all of his teachings about multiple things -– he never said that gay people should be condemned. I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies.”
He did draw a line at any type of requirement that churches must marry people, however there is no movement for such an effort in this country today. In 2010, Carter stated, to some surprise, that he thought the United States was ready for a gay president, because the country had “progressed” and become “acclimated” to the idea.
