LHP Names New VP

D.C.'s Latino GLBT History Project establishes new post, elects Esther Hidalgo

At the group’s monthly meeting in July, the local 12-year-old Latino GLBT History Project (LHP) elected its first vice president, Esther Hidalgo. Hidalgo has worked on the organization’s historical archives committee with the group’s founder, José Gutierrez, an obvious fit for Hidalgo who works by day as an archives technician at the National Archives and Records Administration.

”Our president, David Perez, works very had for this organization,” Hidalgo said in a release announcing her new position. ”When the conversation of a vice president position came up, I saw this as an opportunity to support the organization by applying some of my professional experience and growing knowledge of archives and information management to our shared cause.”

The Latino GLBT History Project’s mission is to ”investigate, collect, preserve and educate the public about the history, culture, heritage, arts, social and rich contributions of the Latino GLBT community in metropolitan Washington.”

Gutierrez, by email, welcomed Hidalgo to her new role.

”Esther is a perfect match for this position because she is dedicated, energetic and she has a passion for history,” he said. ”I love Esther and I know that she is going to open the doors for other Latina lesbians in Washington.”

At that July meeting, the group also elected Jorge Andres Soto to serve as secretary. Notably, LHP has also announced it will be holding the 7th Annual Hispanic LGBTQ Heritage Awards Reception Friday, Oct. 12, at the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Center.
