Homosuperior’s Josh Vogelsong on performing in punk drag
The band, which performs this Saturday, is "everywhere on the spectrum of queer"
Joshua Vogelsong, promoter of the popular monthly punk/drag party Gay/Bash, developed his alter-ego Donna Slash a few years ago alongside the LGBTQ punk act Homosuperior.
“It started with the band, honestly,” he says. “I always knew that I wanted to do this punk rock Divine kind of thing. I just was never sure how to get there. Once Gay/Bash grew to what it is now at Trade, and once the band got a lot of attention, it just kind of all came together.”
This weekend, Homosuperior is one of two opening acts for L.A.-based Chicana punk icon Alice Bag at Comet Ping Pong, where Vogelsong works as bar manager.
“The band is everywhere on the spectrum of queer,” says its gay lead singer, who, depending on “how I feel and how much time we have,” occasionally performs as Joshua. “It’s always been about blurring the lines, and having fun with sexuality and gender…. Sometimes you feel more feminine. Sometimes you feel more butch and just wanna get up there without any makeup on.”
