—Cher, on Tuesday’s episode of MSNBC’s The Last Word, talking about Donald Trump’s attempt to court LGBT voters. Following the mass shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, Trump has tried to use the threat of radical Islamic terrorism to cleave away LGBT support from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
He claims she’s not tough enough to protect the community, and has criticized the Clinton Foundation for accepting money from Muslim-majority nations where homosexuality is either criminalized or punishable by death.
But Cher laughed at the idea of Donald Trump as an advocate for the LGBTQ community, poking fun at Trump’s stumbling over the letters in LGBTQ in his public statements. “Oh, come on,” she told host Lawrence O’Donnell. “He says those letters like a child who’s learning the alphabet.”
She also took aim at Donald’s associations, noting that he attended a “closed-door meeting” — referring to the recent “Rediscovering God in America Restoration Project” conference in Orlando — of more than 400 conservative activists best known for their hostility towards the LGBT community.
“How does he go from that meeting to telling my people that he will protect them?” asked Cher, who has been campaigning on behalf of Clinton at fundraisers in the LGBT-friendly resort towns of Miami, Fire Island, N.Y., and Provincetown, Mass. “And I fear for those people. And not just because of my son. I fear for what they will do to those people, to my people.”
