The state of Georgia will pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a former Georgia Southern University employee who was fired last year after opposing the rollback of LGBTQ-friendly policies and outreach initiatives.
Gemma Skuraton, Georgia Southern's former director of student wellness and health promotion, sued the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and Dr. Shay Little, the university’s vice president for student affairs, in her individual capacity in April.
Skuraton alleged that her firing violated her First Amendment and Title IX rights and constituted illegal retaliation for opposing sex-based discrimination, which she argued includes discrimination based on gender identity.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will limit its enforcement of certain gender-identity discrimination claims against members of the Christian Employers Alliance under a new settlement.
The Christian Employers Alliance (CEA), a group representing Christian employers, sued the EEOC in January 2025, arguing that the agency "improperly applied Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to force employers to affirm and accommodate" transgender employees, reports HR Brew.
CEA claims the agency did this under the Biden administration, including through 2024 guidance addressing pronoun use and access to facilities consistent with employees' gender identity. The group also objected to the EEOC's position on employer-sponsored insurance coverage for gender-affirming care, arguing that these requirements could conflict with some members' religious beliefs.
The Boise School District will pay $34,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a former cisgender student who said she twice encountered a transgender classmate in the girls' restroom at Boise High School in early 2025.
The lawsuit, filed by the right-wing Idaho Family Policy Center Legal Center on behalf of the cisgender student at Boise High School, alleged that the school district permitted the transgender student to use the girls' restroom as part of a "gender support plan," according to Boise NBC affiliate KTVB.
