Fashion Forward Fun

This year Cherry is bringing to town several of house music's most revered DJs, as well as some of the gay scene's more promising newcomers. And not just for April's Cherry Weekend. This Friday, Feb. 1, Apex will donate $3 of its $8 cover charge to The Cherry Fund while giving D.C. a rare taste of Hector "Hot Lips" Fonseca Tapped last year by OUT Magazine as one of New York's hottest DJs, Fonseca, a former model, is more than just a pretty face. He's got a pretty gait too! And just look at how well he accessorizes with accent-color scarves!

But better still, the fashion-forward fop has worked out a fashion-friendly style of music. Fonseca has an edgy, underground New York sound this side of his mentor, Peter "Rah Rah Rah" Rauhofer. He calls it "elektribal" -- that's an amalgam of straight-popular electro and gay-dominating tribal to you, dearie -- with just enough accent-color melody and mischief to keep you warm. This spring Fonseca will release New York Club Anthems 3, a follow-up to the set he mixed last year, featuring tracks with titles that say it all. Are you a "Freak?" Yes, indeed. "The DJ Made Me Do It!"....

Drums and dancing bums

Can you believe it's time for another weekend already? Hearsay was busy last weekend getting leathered and lathered, but it didn't get truly slathered until Sunday, when Hearsay spent all night with men beating on their exposed bums, in the case of the Reaction Dance at the 9:30 Club. At the official MAL dance party, the chapped hides were on display, as were hairy, harnessed chests -- at least once you made it through the long, slow-moving coat-check line. Warren "Put Your Hands Up" Gluck played bright tunes to match the bright lights of John "Open Your Eyes" Niederhauser, not to mention the bright flags of the Reaction dancers -- floggers by day, flaggers by night, Flugelhorn players by command. The men, of course, got dirty, breaking a sweat thrusting and busting a move. Hearsay particularly enjoyed seeing Ray "Leather Leader" Ervin and Dougie "I Saw Santa Kissing a Polar Bear" Gowin lolly-gagging around the packed club, as well as other leather notables, including Nasty Pig owners and models (oink boink!) and assorted other familiar faces and behinds from earlier in the weekend. Now's the time to let loose, men!

Sunday night Hearsay also took in the leather-lighter sights but darker-beat sounds across town at Five. (Hearsay said it was an all-nighter, which is how it came to pass that it's already Thursday and Hearsay just woke up!) Calor promoters Adam Ross "Melody's My Lady" Wilson and Lorenzo "Rhythm Is My Bitch" DeAlmeida outdid themselves by bringing in regular Calor DJ Paulo for a sensational occasion. Hearsay saw a lot of faces at both dance parties Sunday night, but damn if it didn't lose track of 'em all after four days of dreaming. (You mean Hearsay didn't actually trim your toenails at the club, Sean "Sure-Footed" Eagler? That was but a dream? Oh, good.)

Paulo put a special emphasis on his own remixing and production work, and the gig allowed him to show off his skills at the task -- he's essentially picked up where Victor Calderone left off when he gave up remixing a couple years ago. His own new remix of Britney "Not Yet A Woman" Spears's "Toy Soldier" is as stomping as the original, and you can hear others -- many of which he played at Five -- at his website where's he posting productions and sets for free download....

Footloose and (mostly) leather-free

If the thought of thousands of people in town wearing leather and celebrating the leather lifestyle scares you, well, get a non-cowhide grip. (Hearsay hears polypropylene makes a nice alternative, so long as you don't mind the burn.) Of course, if you're a vegetarian, Hearsay suggests you just head on out of town. Why not go here? Still, not everyone can be a leather lover -- and in that case, where can one go this weekend to indulge your non-tastes? Why not Apex Friday night, January 18, with DJ Joe Gauthreaux? As one sign of this Apex regular and still rising circuit star's popularity, Gauthreaux has been tapped to headline the massive One Mighty Party during Orlando's Gay Days in June. On Saturday, January 19, you should hit Be Bar, either early, for Be:X, or later, for Be:Pulse, both offering "cutting edge electronic music and visuals." But if you still feel like moving without the moo, other leather-lite weekend options include: Town Danceboutique, either Friday for DJ Wess with the young'uns and the men who love 'em, or Saturday for DJ David Knapp with the established clubheads and the muscle-men who love 'em; Taint on Sunday, January 20, at DC9 featuring the return of the original Taint DJ Rock Chasty plus other counter-culture craziness; and Calor, also on Sunday, which starts with a pre-party at Halo early in the night, then at 10 p.m. moves to Five, where DJ Paulo will spin. One listen to his online Gimme More Tribal set and you'll be begging just like poor little Britney: Gimme, gimme more, gimme more, gimme gimme....

If you're part of the leather lifestyle -- or even if you just like the look of a man in leather -- is this ever the weekend for you! You probably already know about the official events of Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend, the country's largest after IML in Chicago. These include the Meet the MEAT Tour of Omega, Green Lantern and the DC Eagle Friday night, January 18 (by God, that's TONIGHT!), and the MAL pageant Sunday afternoon, January 20, when Mr. MAL gets harnessed and sashed; and Sunday night's Reaction Dance with DJ Warren Gluck, when everyone else gets harnessed -- and sashayed! -- and leather lust reaches its peak. But before it does, you got other places to get your lust on -- both on- and off-line. Green Lantern hosts the DaddyHunt party Saturday night, January 19, when "hot DADDIES" and "eager HUNTERS" meet starting at 9 p.m. Later that night comes the Recon Party at Apex, when "the world's largest gay fetish profiles website" logs off and goes "Full Fetish." DJ Lennie III will spin dark, sexy tunes like he does in Provincetown, and there will be performances from sexy gay (and local!) singer Sean Ensign and other fetishists -- including, Hearsay's been told, a bondage show and a demonstration of the 69 things you can do with an iPhone. Don't you dare think of going without wearing a uniform, leather or otherwise, or showing some skin, from your head to your (by that point, already) chapped hide. Don't own any leather? Well, The Leather Rack, at 1723 Connecticut Avenue NW, is your best choice for finding the perfect harness, belt, boot or, ahem, toy. (No big plushie giraffes in this store's toy section -- unless you're into that kind of thing. Not that Hearsay finds anything wrong with that...) The Washington Plaza Hotel is were all the action starts and ends. If you don't already have a room, tough luck -- it's been sold out for months. But anyone can and everyone does mingle in and around the lobby every night of the weekend. And best of all, there's no charge! So put on your best vest and stop by. Maybe Hearsay will offer you a smoke-free cigar....

Hearsay was alerted to this YouTube post of D.C. musical theater phenom Will "Let Me Rip Off My Shirt" Gartshore, performing Sensitive Song at Crack. Who'd have thunk we'd ever hear this studly songbird warble the lyrics "She's a fuck machine?" Ahem, cough, cough....

Varla Jean Merman Speaks Your Language...

Why, lucky-loo, you've got two chances this weekend to see Varla Jean Merman2007-01-11_feature_story_2495_3322.jpg. Who is this mer-man, you ask? Well, she's reportedly the love child of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman who attended Louisiana State University under the alias -- to protect the innocent! -- Jefferey Roberson. Or is it the other way around? She's also, apparently, anatomically incorrect, and famous for regular summer performances in Provincetown. But she's most famous for her role in the 2003 ultra-indie and small-cult classic film Girls Will Be Girls, a drag send-up of high-camp movies that you know and love, from All About Eve to Mommie Dearest. Merman performs her one-drag-queen stage act Varla Jean Merman Loves a Foreign Tongue Friday night, January 18, at Baltimore's Club Hippo, which for those of you who have never made the pilgrimage, has been the toast of Charm City for 35 years. She will also perform briefly on Sunday afternoon, January 20, at Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend's leather pageant. Perhaps she'll also be whipping around our leather-town by day? Maybe somebody will crack that whip on her duffle bag...
