Oyamel_Margarita.jpgIt’s a celebration that has been centuries in the making. From Mon., March 10 through Sun., March 23, chef Jose Andres’ Oyamel will hold its seventh annual Tequila & Mezcal Festival in honor of Mexico’s most prized spirits.

The festival will begin with a kickoff party on Mon., March 10, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will take over the entire restaurant and feature food stations that pay tribute to Mexico’s rich street food culture including guacamole with comal-fired tortillas, whole baby pig cochinita tacos, street-style ceviches, goat leg barbacoa, esquites and comal-fried quesadillas.

Beverages will include the signature Oyamel Margarita and an assortment of tequila and mezcal specialty cocktails as well as tastings . Live Latin music from the band Montuno will be featured during the party. The all-inclusive tickets are $60 and available for sale online.

Following the kickoff party, each day of the festival there will be menu specials (ranging from $9 to $14 ea.) including Ostiones con Salsa Piquin, oysters on the half shell, topped with salsa piquin, onion and cilantro; Ceviche Estilo Culiacan, marinated bass with Serrano, lime, onion, cilantro, tomatillos and house-made hot sauce; Ceviche de Chamoy, sliced Hawaiian Ono dusted with chile piquin, with mango and chile mulatos, chamoy, peanuts, cucumber, onion, lime and cilantro; and Jalapeno Escabeche Relleno con Carne Seca, pickled jalapenos stuffed with dried beef and topped with chopped tomatillos.

In addition to the special menu, Oyamel will host complimentary tequila and mezcal tastings, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., March 11 to 13, and March 17 to 20. These tastings will take place with representatives from the featured brands who will share their knowledge on the spirits and answer questions from guests.

Following each tasting, there will be a featured pre-fixe dinner for a limited number of guests in Oyamel’s private dining room. The dinners will begin at 8:30 p.m. and cost $90 per person for the featured meal and cocktail pairing. More details for the dinners and ticket information are available by calling (202) 628-1005.
