This year Cherry is bringing to town several of house music’s most revered DJs, as well as some of the gay scene’s more promising newcomers. And not just for April’s Cherry Weekend. This Friday, Feb. 1, Apex will donate $3 of its $8 cover charge to The Cherry Fund while giving D.C. a rare taste of Hector “Hot Lips” Fonseca Tapped last year by OUT Magazine as one of New York’s hottest DJs, Fonseca, a former model, is more than just a pretty face. He’s got a pretty gait too! And just look at how well he accessorizes with accent-color scarves!

But better still, the fashion-forward fop has worked out a fashion-friendly style of music. Fonseca has an edgy, underground New York sound this side of his mentor, Peter “Rah Rah Rah” Rauhofer. He calls it “elektribal” — that’s an amalgam of straight-popular electro and gay-dominating tribal to you, dearie — with just enough accent-color melody and mischief to keep you warm. This spring Fonseca will release New York Club Anthems 3, a follow-up to the set he mixed last year, featuring tracks with titles that say it all. Are you a “Freak?” Yes, indeed. “The DJ Made Me Do It!”….
