When I started reviewing theater for the Hill Rag in 1984, as a wide-eyed novice to the local performing arts scene, I remember thinking, “How much theater could there be to fill a weekly column?” A lot, it turned out.
I still mourn the loss of the companies I once frequented, among them Leslie Jacobson’s Horizons and Bart Whiteman’s Source, where the work was always challenging, insightful, and fueled by passion and purpose.
By the same token, I marveled at the slow but steady growth of companies like Woolly Mammoth, who went from performing in a church on G Street to operating their own gorgeous downtown space.
And I was frequently left in awe by the soaring works of legendary directors like Joy Zinoman, Zelda Fitzgerald, and Michael Kahn.
There was even a point in my reviewing career that I was at the Kennedy Center so often — back in the days when Peter Sellars turned the nation’s performing arts center into a mind-warping experimental playground — I used to joke it was my second home.
In 40 years, I’ve watched the D.C. theater landscape evolve and only get bigger and more consequential. The thrill of what happens on local stages remains as electric, eclectic, and energetic as ever, fueled by the notion that the greatest works of theater provide an experience like few others: the chance to explore ideas, both contemporary and classic, the chance to be delighted and entertained, and the chance to revisit history through the eyes of playwrights long departed from this mortal plane.

The Piano Lesson — August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is the fourth in his extraordinary “American Century Cycle.” Set in Pittsburgh in the 1930s, Berniece and her brother Boy Willie navigate the complexities of their past centered around an heirloom piano. A fascinating contemplation, The Comeuppance takes another journey into playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' alternate universe in which the ordinary is sent spiraling into the extraordinary. With his usual mastery, Jacobs-Jenkins delivers with a precision instrument, weaving a subtle yet gripping tapestry of ideas, feelings and provocations.
As always, there is wit and warmth, even as he prods us into his favored territory: that which makes our moral compasses -- and sometimes our souls -- spin.
Like the preamble to a puzzle, The Comeuppance advances on us with a seemingly harmless premise: a "pre-game" gathering of former high school classmates hoping to reconnect over a few drinks before heading to a 20th reunion. The certainty that this is a construct -- a space in which Jacobs-Jenkins will throw down his gauntlet -- comes with a starkly-lit foreground set against a seemingly endless background of gauzy black layers.
Every single day, for 20 years straight, bookstore assistant Kenneth has headed after work to Wally's Tiki Bar to get blitzed on Mai Tais with his best friend Bert. Wally's, as Kenneth informs the audience at the top of Eboni Booth's 2024 Pulitzer-winning drama Primary Trust, is his favorite place in Cranberry, New York, the sleepy Rochester suburb he's called home all 38 years of his life.
Standing center stage, Kenneth (Julius Thomas III) proudly points out Wally's among the buildings and homes of Cranberry, modeled in relief around the walls of Signature's ARK Theatre. He speaks of the place with childlike joy, admitting he might be prone to angry outbursts on occasion, but all's well as long as he's got Wally's and Mai Tais after work with Bert.
Billie Holiday is onstage dwindling before our eyes, struggling to sustain the fire that brought her to this moment. She's already told her audience, "You can only get to where you're at by way of where you've been," and this iconic performer has been to hell and back -- whorehouses, prison, addiction, heartache -- but she's still here, barely.
The Billie Holiday portrayed in Lanie Robertson's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill comprises a fascinating, tragic triple image, a performance of a performer performing the role of someone who isn't still messed up on heroin.
