Eric Holder on his same-sex marriage evolution
“People are educated. We evolve. We get better. Things get better. I hope that I’ve gotten better.”
— Outgoing attorney general Eric Holder, speaking with The Advocate about his evolution on marriage equality and gay rights. Holder’s replacement, Loretta Lynch, was confirmed by the Senate this week as the next attorney general.
“I was a young judge here in Washington, D.C., when a case was brought by a same-sex couple seeking to be married. And a judge wrote what I thought was a very thoughtful opinion, denying that right,” he said. “I think back now to that young judge, to that opinion, and I’m in a fundamentally different place than I was then.”
He also commented on his support for LGBT rights.
“The movement that we’re talking about today for same-sex marriage rights — which is a part of the larger gay and lesbian fight for equality — that is the civil rights struggle for our time,” he said. “This is the fight to make real the promise of America for all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
