Packing heat: Pro-gun group targets LGBT voters
California pro-gun coalition wants LGBT voters to oppose gun control

—Coalition for Civil Liberties’ new campaign opposing gun control. The California group’s campaign aims at getting women and LGBT voters to say no to gun control.
The group, which is supported by the NRA, hopes to defeat the bill “Safety for All,” created by California’s Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, which would require background checks on ammunition. Richard Grinell, the GOP spokesman behind the ad campaign, said “Gavin is losing the traditional Democrat coalitions like women, the working class, and the LGBT community who are challenging the progressive idea that the government should be the center of our lives.”
The pro-gun group’s first advertisement targets suburban women, depicting a woman in a dark parking garage, attacked by a hooded man in the shadows. However, when she reaches for the gun to attack, it isn’t loaded. The 30-second ad ends with the words “Take Away Our Rights, Take Away Our Life.” Time magazine reports that on Wednesday, an identical ad will be run with a transgender woman, targeted in areas with higher percentages of LGBT individuals.
The Coalition for Civil Liberties isn’t the only group urging LGBT voters to oppose “Safety for All.” The Pink Pistols are a nationwide pro-gun LGBT group opposing the bill, with the blunt mission statement: “Armed queers don’t get bashed.”
